Turkish Tile Art, taking its roots from Uighur, Karakhanid, Ghaznevid, Fatımid and especially Iranian Great Seljuk art, created unique examples for centuries by synthesizing the effects of different cultural environments. Turkish tile art is one of the branches that composes the most beautiful examples of Turkish decorative arts. The essence of Turkish decorative arts is motif. Motif is the smallest unit of the patterns and a building stone in a sense. A common motif repertoire is generally used in Turkish decorative arts. The motifs used in tile art are parallel to those used in other decorative arts. Outside of the motifs in abstract forms, they take their source from nature. In our traditional arts, artists avoided imitating nature as it is, and for that reason most motifs were applied by stylizing. In this study, a review of the most used motifs in Turkish Tile art patterns will be presented.
