In Russia, many radical reforms were made in order to be “westernized” in 18 th century –after Peter I. One of these reforms was in education system to be regulated by German norms. Main purpose of this system regulated by the “western thought” is to meet the requirement of qualified human resources needed in the areas of finance and military. Nevertheless, as only the Russian nobility could benefit from it and existing education system in the 19 th century became one of the most important national problems in Russia during this period. Lev Tolstoy, who often reflected national problems in his works, was impressed by J.J. Rousseau and his philosophical understanding in the field of education and conducted similar studies in Russia during this period. The aim of this study is to reveal Lev Tolstoy’s pedagogical studies by examining not only the opinions of the author himself but also the sources both in Turkish and foreign languages and analyzing the information gained.Besides, studies conducted by Lev Tolstoy in 19 th century are critical for the field of pedagogy, importance of which is gradually increasing.
