Many important cultural heritage sites around the world have a fragile structure and face many risks. Many risk factors threaten cultural heritage sites such as natural disasters, war, damage from tourism, environmental pollution, irregular urbanization, inadequate protection and uncontrolled practices. Risk management; is a systematic approach that takes the holistic approach of identifying, evaluating, understanding and reducing risks. This study aims to assess the reflection of the concept of risk management on cultural heritage areas, which has recently gained importance in Turkey. Risk management in cultural heritage areas outlines how to design a risk management methodology that will enable a systematic plan to be drawn, how to include the continuity and sustainability of ancillary monuments and other cultural heritage items in the area. In this study, developments in international and national documents and regulations related to risk management were handled by content analysis method and applications on human-induced risks in cultural heritage areas are evaluated. It is seen that the issue of risk management, which was seen as the first case in the international documents in 1954, has evolved into the preparations for the identification of the risks towards the cultural assets and the historical environment, and the preparation for the risks caused by human intervention. As a result of the review, it has been determined that the concept of risk management, which is mostly associated with disaster management in our country, should be reorganized with the redefinition of cultural heritage sites as well as the risks in these areas.
