Social studies is an important elementary education course which studies people as social beings as they have existed and interacted with each other and the environment in time and place In a national educational project Ministry of National Education MNE developed all elementary school courses with a constructivist view in 2004 In this paper social studies curriculum which was develoıped with this approach was evaluated in terms of contemporary social studies curriculum trends With this aim in mind first contemporary social studies trends and universal curriculum standards are determined by investigating the literature After that social studeis curriculum that was approved by the Education and Training Committe of MNE was evaluated by using the universal curriculum standards and trenda as criterion The evaluation results indicated that in general Turkish social studies curriculum was in accordance with the main principles and standards of National Council for the Social Studies NCSS Detailed investigation in the main dimension of the curriculum showed that although it reflects contemporary curriculum trends in social studies there seems some problems in the dynamic connections among the components of the curricıulum Key words: Social studies curriculum constructivism curriculum evaluation
