Türk ve dünya tarihinin önemli dönüm noktalarından birisi olarak kabul edilen Çanakkale Muhârebeleri sırasında Türk askerî, destansı bir kahramanlık örneği vererek müttefik donanmasını büyük bir mağlubiyete uğratmıştır. Bu sonuç, başta İngiltere olmak üzere, müttefik devletlerin kamuoyunda harekâtla ilgili birçok tartışmaya sebep olmuştur. Müttefik ordularının Çanakkale’deki başarısızlığı, İngiliz siyasetçileri tarafından örtbas edilmek istenmesine rağmen, harekâtın sevk ve idaresi ciddi eleştirilere muhatap olmuştur. Bu bağlamda Çanakkale harekâtını savaş muhabiri olarak izleyen Ellis Ashmead Bartlett’in muhârebeler hakkında yazdıkları, cephedeki İngiliz yetkilileri tarafından engellenmeye çalışılmış, sansüre tabi tutulmuştur. Ancak bu engellemeler, Bartlett’in Çanakkale Savaşları hakkında verdiği bilgilerin başta İngiltere olmak üzere bir çok ülkede büyük yankı bulmasını ve Bartlett’in eserlerinin, Çanakkale Savaşı hakkında yapılan araştırmalarda temel literatür kitapları arasına girmesini engelleyememiştir. Savaşı bizzat gözlemleyen Bartlett’in Gelibolu’dan gönderdiği haberlere resmî kısıtlamaların getirilmesi, kendisinin sansürle mücadelesine sebep olmuştur. Bu açıdan çalışma, Gelibolu Harekâtı hakkında, gerçeklerin ortaya konmasını güçleştiren faktörlerin algılanmasına ve bilimsel açıdan gözler önüne serilmesine katkı sağlayacaktır.
