Violence against women in our country was interpreted and understood to be a domestic issues for several decades. This approach has been changed because of the influence of the women's movement in 1980’s, that domestic violence is a crime, where the local law enforcement would protect violence against women based on enforceability of the Act. As a result, it was a matter of public discussion in the society as oppose to being a private personal matter. The first Act preventing violence against women under Turkish Law is the Family Protection Law number 4320 came into force on January 17, 1998. Subsequently, the Act No: 4320 was inadequate and a new Act needed to be enforced or amendments were required to be made in the existing Act. Finally, on March 8, 2012 Act of Family Protection and Prevention of Violence Against Women and also on January 18, 2013 The Regulation on the Act of Family Protection and Prevention of Violence Against Women was approved and enforced. The purpose of this article, to address some of the major innovations, changes and amendments introduced in the framework of Law No. 6284 and related Regulations and to draw attention to deficiencies in the law and in practice.
