The purposes of this study are to to reveal the impact of concept maps method' on students' academic achievement and to evaluate students' perceptions about the implementation. In the study, the sample was comprised of 82 students who were studying in 9th grade of a private secondary school in Istanbul. Out of 82 students, 38 were in experimental group and 44 were in control group. The activities were implemented in a two-hour lecture about Earth's shape and movements. The pretest posttest experimental research model with control group was used in the implementation. The impact of concept maps method on academic achievement and students' perceptions of implementation were determined using achievement test and assessment survey. Mann-Whitney U Test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, regression analysis and some descriptive statistics were used in the analysis with the help of SPSS®. The study revealed that the concept maps model contributed more to the students' achievement in geography education compared to traditional teaching. Besides, the students' perceptions were positive and they participated in the activity easily. The students thought that the concept maps model had increased their thinking, learning and asking skills and affected their interest to lesson and curiosity about the subjects in a positive way.
