Various activities were carried out during CHP (Republican People’s Party) government in order to revitalize the fishing industry which had been taken over from the Ottoman State with significant problems. This issue was kept up-to-date throughout the entire CHP government, as it was important to introduce a new fisheries law among these activities. In this framework, during the period of 1923-1938, various decisions were made for the sector and a Fishery Congress was organized with the participation of the related parties between December 1st and 7th 1936. In this congress, even though the draft of fisheries prepared by the Ministry of Economy was accepted, it was not passed into law. Similarly, Denizbank, which had been established in 1937, was liquidated in 1939 on the grounds that it could not work efficiently. In the course of World War II, some measures were taken to support fishery, but they were not sufficient and the fisheries law was not enacted either. After the war, the fishery was planned to be developed by government support as well as the aid from the Marshall Plan. Despite the fact that various activities were carried out in this direction, the fisheries law, which was the greatest expectation of the industry, was again not enacted in this period. For this reason, it is possible to say that the steps regarding fishery during the CHP government were inadequate and partly successful.
