The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of using materials in teaching some of the mathematics topics on the sixth grade students’ mathematical thinking skills. Twenty students, who lived in low-SES neighborhood, volunteered to participate in the study. Qualitative design was used to collect and analyze data. Various tasks involving use of materials were developed and students engaged with the tasks for 21 weeks. The implementations of tasks were videotaped. The analysis of videotapes and students’ worksheets revealed that changes there are in students’ mathematical thinking skills.
