The term “Homo Sovieticus” lost its feature of being a descriptive identity after the fall of the USSR, and has not replaced with a relevant identity. The question of identity in the RF started to get a new form with the reemergence of national identities, besides religious, cultural, ethnic etc. identities during the 1990’s. Some of them tried to recover their identities through democratic ways while the RF was striving to create a national idea serving integrating all peoples in order to secure territorial integrity. One of the most important issues, with which the Russian policy-makers dealt, was the search for a new identity. The search for a national identity in Russia continues still by getting new forms. This essay tells about those efforts for creating a national idea and identity, which started with Boris Yeltsin, became a state policy in the RF, and has been carried out by the state power.
