Proverbs which reveal nations’ perspectives about life and event sand different ways of thinking (mentality, consciousness) are knitted by metaphorical (meta: öte/beyond; phrein: taşımak/tocarry) structures that people refer to even in their daily lives. A metaphor, as a literary device has an elusive meaning differentiates the language of a proverb from the language of daily life. Metaphors used as instruments for linking something with another thing are mostly used in proverbs which explain or reveal a concept with a different conceptual field or way of thinking. At present, the proverbs used in some of theim portant written works of the Turkish language have been analyzed with regards to metaphor use. However, most of theim portant works of the Turkish language have not been analyzed with regards to metaphors, which are used at different times than other figures of speech, specific to the Turkish Language (eğretileme), (istiare), (mecaz). Moreover, there searcher has not found a study on the use of metaphors in Dede Korkut (Dada Gorgud), which is one of the most important works within the field of Turkish Language and Literature. For this reason, in this study, the metaphors used in the proverbs stated in Dede Korkut (Dada Gorgud) are discussed under three main categories: structural, ontological and orientational. These definitions and classifications come from the work(s) George Lakoff and Mark Johnson.
