Abstract enThe purpose of this study was to investigate the emphatic tendency of pre-service teachers in terms of self-monitoring. The participants of this study consisted of randomly selected 636 (female:373, 57% and male: 273, 43%) students from the Faculty of Education at Pamukkale University. In the study, two different scales were used. The first scale (Empathic Tendency Scale, Dökmen, 1988) was administered for measuring the studentsâ empathic tendency. The second scale (Self-monitoring Scale, Synder, 1974) was used for measuring the monitoring level of their behaviors in social conditions. The analysis of data showed that while empathic tendency was predicted by gender and the extraversion, other-oriented and role playing subscales of The Self/monitoring Scale. Sympathic tendency was also predicted by extraversion and other-oriented subscales of The Self-monitoring, and gender. Results have been discussed in the lihght of empathy and self-monitoring literatures.
