Students’, Teachers’ and Administrators’ Opinions About Freshman High School Students’ Engagement

Abstract enThe purpose of this study is to investigate opinions of students, teachers and administrators on freshman high school studens’ school engagement. The sample of the study consisted of 408 students, chosen via stratified-sampling method, progress their high school education in Ankara province during 2005- 2006 academic year. Whether students’ engagement is related with their gender, was investigated with t-test, and families’educational level and income level are investigated with One-way of Anova. The opinion of teachers and administors on decreasing factors of student engagement was analysed by t-test. Results revealed that female students’ engagement level are higher than that of boys. The students whose mothers’ educational level and whose families’ income level is higher are more engaged. No any relation was found between fathers’ educational level and student engagement. Both teachers and administrators were perceived ‘teacher based factors’ as the most influential factors decreasing student engagement.
