Today new technologies for use in communication are being developed at a fast pace and as a consequence the world we know is changing rapidly. The most important factor in the development of the new communication technologies is without doubt the Internet. New media, which is heavily supported by the Internet technology, changed the means used for mass media communication also. The convergence of TV, an important mass media communication instrument, with Internet created the IPTV, an interactive broadcast technology. The IPTV broadcast technology hastened the transfer from the TV as we know, to the TV over Internet. This, in turn resulted in increased popularity of Internet. Social networks started to move to the forefront of communication as IPTV evolved into Smart TV and as the number of Internet users grew rapidly. The youth, specially in Turkey, is more involved in the use of new communication technologies and social networking. The distinction between the real and the virtual worlds is disappearing as social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ keep increasing rapidly the number of their users both in Turkey and all over the World. In this study, a detailed analysis is made of the reasons for the intense interest of the youth in social networks. Information concerning computers, Internet technology and social networks is provided first. Then, a metric for the relation between the youth and the social media, "Measure of Position Determination in Social Networking" is developed. Thus, an attempt is made to determine the position of the youth in the use of social networking. The study is concluded in the light of its findings and suggestions are made for further study.
