Increating and defining identity, “theother” has often been sought to create comparisons and contrasts to make a definition. The concepts of “theother” and “the for eigner” have helped individuals and communities set their own boundaries. Along side the setting of boundaries, stereo types and prejudices emerge in representing “theother” in cultural hegemony—especially in there presentations of “theother” in the media, which is a means of public communication reaching a large audience, the formation or consolidation of prejudices is quite common. Judgements which are learned via media or shaped by media have been an important research area for various disciplines, e.g. communication and psychology. In the first section of this article, the concepts of “identity”, “theother” and “representation” are addressed, followed by a discussion of the role of stereo types and prejudices in the sustainable presence of “theother,” as well as in rebuilding “theother” through representation. In the second section, the role of the media—an important representative area considering the extensive coverage of mass media—in constructing “identity” and “representation” is addressed. Finally, the role of the ethnic comedies in themedia in representing “theother” and “theforeigner” is discussed in the third section.
