This study aims to describe and discuss the varied forms of family structures. As the smallest social unit of society, the family has been instrumental to the development of cultures and nations. The family has lost many functions such as education, health and social security. The family system is a basic unit of society that has evolved along with changes in the needs and demands of the individuals and society. Especially, in the modern period, the family structure changed a lot of domains including status, roles and parent relations. As in Turkish society, however, the importance of family continues for individuals and society. There are several differences in the types of families in the world; they have certain things in common. The industrial age in western society and modernity brought a decreased connection with the extended family in many cultures. İn this period, an increased responsibility on the parents to generate income as a worker outside of family unit became the norm. Indicators of family disequilibrium, such as divorces and the number of children being raised in single-parent families, are rising alarmingly.
