The purpose of this study is to find out the perceptions of the faculty and students regarding the performance assessment of faculty. The study sample consisted of 108 faculty members and 230 students at the Ege University. Data were collected by Faculty Expectations of Performance Assessment Scale developed by researcher. t-test, F-test and content analysis were used in the data analysis. Results indicated that faculty expectations from the assessment process concentrated on identifying individual and institutional weaknesses and deficiencies. The most important barriers to instructional performance assessment were reported as lack of agreement among faculty on performance assessment measures and lack of institutional resources. There was a consensus among faculty members that performance assessment should be conducted by a panel of experts within the academic department. There were significant differences between perceptions of faculty and students as well as between academic departments and academic titles.
