Özet:

It was aimed to describe resilient students who were able to overcome their socio-economic background and perform well at school and socio-economically disadvantaged low achievers among 15-year-old students participating in PISA 2009 in Turkey. The target population of this study consists of 15-year-old students at the time of the assessment and completed at least 6 years of formal schooling, regardless of the type of institution in which they are enrolled. Sample of PISA 2009 Turkey consisted 4996 students who were chosen randomly from 170 schools in 56 provinces located in 12 statistical regions (NUTS). The sample of this study consisted 282 resilient students and 831 disadvantaged low achievers among 15-year-olds participating in PISA 2009. The analyses of the study were performed on these students. The vast majority of resilient students achieved Level 3. Female students were over-presented among resilient students in reading. Marmara Region had the highest proportion of resilient students and the highest proportion of disadvantaged low achievers. General high school had the highest proportion of resilient students. It is a must to invest educational resources where resilient students can make the greatest difference and it is required to deliver high quality learning consistently across the entire education system, such that every student benefits from excellent learning opportunities.
