The aim of this research was to assess whether the social adjustment of alcohol addicts differ with respect to their self-consciousness. In doing this research, the social adjustment of alcohol addicts and their self-consciousness were also investigated with respect to the variables of sex, marital and educational status. The research was performed in accordance with the correlational scanning model. The study was conducted with hospitalized patients in Bakırköy State Hospital for Mental Health and Neurological Disorders, AMATEM (Alcohol and Drug Research, Treatment and Education Center) and Balıklı Rum Foundation Hospital, Anatolia Clinic for Alcohol Addiction Treatment. The patient group consisted of 3 (%6.5) female and 43 (%93.5) male individuals. The mean age of subjects was 44. Two samples were used during the data gathering phase. To assess the self-consciousness and self-esteem of alcohol addicts, Self-Schema Inventory, and for the assessment of the social adjustment, Hacettepe Personality Inventory were used. Additionally, the subjects were required to complete a questionnaire prepared by the researcher, to reach such variables as age, sex, marital and educational status, history of alcohol abuse, etc. After the data gathering phases, the statistical analysis of the raw data was done by SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences for Windows 10.0). To test whether social adjustment of alcohol addicts differ with respect to their self-consciousness, Pearson Correlation Test was used. Moreover, Mann Whitney U Test was used to test whether the self-consciousness and social adjustment differ with respect to their sex; for the marital and educational status of the alcohol addicts Kruskal Wallis Test was used. Their significance was tested at 0.05 or 0.01 level (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01) on two-tails. The following are the findings of the research, in summary: 1) It was found that the family and social relationships, social norms, antisocial tendencies and the total level of social adjustment of alcohol addicts differ with respect to their self-consciousness. A decrease in the dimensions of social adjustment (family and social relations, social norms and antisocial tendencies) was determined in those alcohol addicts with a low level and negative self-consciousness. An increase in the dimensions of social adjustment was determined in alcohol addicts with a high level and positive selfconsciousness. 2) The self-consciousness of the alcohol addicts showed no differences with regard to sex, marital and educational status. 3) The social adjustment of the alcohol addicts showed no differences with regard to sex, marital and educational status.
