The aim of this study is to assess the views of in-service biology teachers about the new biology curriculum and examine their views and practices with regard to new assessment and evaluation approaches introduced by the new curriculum. A qualitative approach was adopted in the research design. Participants of the study were eight biology teachers who were teaching biology in different types of secondary schools in Istanbul in the 2008-2009 academic year. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed utilizing the “Constant Comparison Method”. The results of the study revealed that the participants generally viewed the new biology curriculum “ineffective”. The participants pointed out factors such as inadequate structure and content of the new curriculum, insufficient time devoted for biology teaching and over-crowded classes as reasons for their dissatisfaction. Besides, the results indicated lack of knowledge and understanding of the philosophy of the new curriculum on the teachers’ side. These factors negatively affected the participants’ understanding and practice of the new assessment and evaluation approaches introduced by the new curriculum. The results point out an urgent need for in-service education for teachers about the philosophical basis and practical applications of both the new curriculum and the assessment and evaluation approach introduced by the new curriculum. Key words: Assessment and evaluation, curriculum, biology teachers,
