Number concept which plays a major role in the structuring of human cognitive, has contributed greatly to the development of civilization since ancient times. Number concept is one of the hallmarks of the ability of human knowledge and understanding. The aim of this study was to identify eighth grade students' conceptions of number and numbers sets. In the research, as data collection tool, a questionnaire consisting of open-ended questions was designed and administered to 62 students. In the determination of questions, the secondary school mathematics curriculum, the relevant literature and the researcher's teaching experiences were utilized. The obtained data were analysed by using content analysis which is a qualitative analysis method. According to the results of the study, the students' number concept was very strongly associated with the writing style of numbers. In this context, for a large part of them, only numbers with comma were decimal, fractions were rational and radical numbers were irrational. Further, their knowledge on number sets and the relationship with each other was very limited.
