Abstract:

Since 2011, the forced immigration of Syrians to Turkey has left Turkey facing a massive immigration stream. In the beginning, the Syrians, who were thought to return when the situation in their countries improved, were addressed along with the saying "host" in both political and social spheres. However, in the process, the question of the situation in Syria is not improved and the forecast that it will soon improve has led to discussions about the durability of the population of 4 million Syrians in Turkey. Academic studies have also formed a strong interest in the topic in the framework of topics such as social integration, social harmony, living together. In recent studies in the field of sociology, the Syrians have begun to be dealt with by referring to their differentiated characteristics, being identified with the concept of "stranger" in the context of the theories of foreigners developed by Simmel, Park and Bauman. In this study, the national situations where foreign theories arise and the dynamics of Turkish experience discuss how suitable the use of the concept of "stranger" for the Syrians is. The main claim of this article is that the international immigration and immigration experience of the countries where foreign debate arises is quite different from the experience of Turkey and that it takes a long history to understand whether the Syrians are sociologically defined as "strangers" or not.
