Özet:

This study aims to reveal the role of value orientations regarding the differentiation between the two groups living in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and described as Turkish Cypriot and Turkish Immigrant. The concept of Turkish Cypriot is used to describe the descendants of the Turks who were sent to the island during the Ottoman period and who are currently residing in the TRNC; the concept of Turkish Immigrant is used to describe the TRNC citizens migrated to the island from Turkey after the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation. The population of the study is TRNC citizens and the sample consists of 337 people (165 Turkish Cypriots (49%) and 172 Turkish Immigrants (51%)) selected by simple random method. Schwartz Values Scale was applied to the participants in order to determine their value orientations. The applied scale is the version of the original scale which has been changed to 11 value groups by adding religiosity variable. As a result of the logistic regression analysis, it was found that all value orientations together predicted whether the participants were Turkish Cypriot or Turkish Immigrant. On the other hand, when value orientations were taken individually, only religiosity, stimulation and hedonism values significantly predicted being Turkish Cypriot or Turkish Immigrant. Accordingly, 68.2% of the participants were correctly predicted to join the groups. Value orientations predicted membership to the Turkish Immigrant group (73.3%) at a higher rate than membership to the Turkish Cypriot group (63.0%). 126 out of 172 Turkish Immigrants and 104 out of 165 Turkish Cypriots were correctly predicted to be members of their own group. Emerging research findings are discussed and interpreted in the context of the relevant literature.
