Abstract:

In the first article of this series consisting of two articles, the letters of İbnülemin Mahmud Kemal İnal which are found in the Şark İstiklâl Mahkemesi and adressed to müderris and müfti Mehmed Kemaleddin Efendi were examined along with some rough copies of Kemaleddin Efendi. In this article the letters that were sent from Kemaleddin Efendi from Harput to İbnülemin in the last years of his life were examined. The letters are now a part of the Istanbul University Rare Book Collection. It can be clearly seen from the letters that that Kemaleddin Efendi did not overrule the influence of his trial in the Şark İstiklal Court. Due to chronic diabetes and the additon of bladder cancer and vascular stiffness in Kemaleddin Efendi’s last years the main subject of the letters were health issues. Kemaleddin Efendi sent along an explanation of his translation of Aliyyü’l-Kâri’s el-Mülemma’ and some of his poems with the letters. The most remarkable among his poems is the chronogram he wrote upon the death of his fellow-townsman Abdullah Cevdet. We hope that the letters of two famous characters of their times and circles will make a contribution to our literature on their works.
