Although there is a significant increase in the trade relations between African continent and Turkey over the last decade, the trade performance is still low compared to the trade levels with the other continents. Exports to Africa as a proportion of the Turkey’s total export amounted to only 7 percent in 2014, compared to 42 percent to EU and 21 percent to Asia. There are several reasons for this weak trade performance with Africa. The weakness of African industries with a limited number of products and dependence of their exports heavily on primary commodities are among the main barriers to the boosting of trade with African continent. In addition, many African countries lag behind other developing countries in terms of physical and social infrastructure. In this study, using the most recent trade data, the current situation of Turkish-African trade relations and its prospects are discussed.
