The Black Sea, became an inner sea following the Ottoman conquests in the region after 1453, had a lively international trade network before the Turkish conquest. The framework of international trade maintained by Italian traders in the region prior to Turkish dominion was determined by ahdnames granted to European states as from the second half of the 15th century. Thus, it was added a special article about Black Sea trade to ahdnames given also to France, England and Holland as from 16th and 17th centuries, in addition to Italian city states as Venice, Florence and Genoa. But it is seen that this trade was not completely put into practice during the centuries due to Ottoman administrator’s distinct attitude to Black Sea. In this context, some foreign merchant vessels entered the Black Sea were also ejected without trading. In this article, it will be determined some problematics on international trade in the Black Sea in terms of extant ahdnames, including that of Florentines granted by the emperor of Trebizond in 1460, other Ottoman archival documents and sources.
