Bu çalışmanın amacı, ilköğretimde genel eğitim sınıfında kaynaştırma uygulamasından yararlanan destek eğitimden alan, destek eğitim almayan ve özel eğitim sınıflarına devam eden özel gereksinimli öğrencilerin sosyal becerilerini incelemek ve karşılaştırmaktır. Araştırma zihinsel yetersizliğe sahip kaynaştırma sürecindeki öğrencilerinin sosyal becerilerini karşılaştırmalı olarak inceleyen betimsel bir çalışmadır. Çalışma grubu 2010-2011 eğitim-öğretim yılında İzmir ilinde 12 ilköğretim okuluna devam eden zihinsel yetersizliğe sahip 190 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Veriler, Sosyal Beceri Derecelendirme Sistemi-SBDS (Social Skills Rating System) ile toplanmıştır. İlköğretim sınıflarına devam kaynaştırma öğrencilerinin, ilköğretim sınıflarına devam eden aynı zamanda destek eğitim odasından destek eğitim alan kaynaştırma öğrencilerinin ve ilköğretim okullarında özel eğitim sınıflarına devam eden öğrencilerin sosyal beceri ve problem davranış düzeyleri arasında herhangi bir farklılık bulunmamıştır. Akademik yetersizlik açısından karşılaştırıldığında ise özel eğitim sınıfı öğrencilerinin akademik becerileri düzeyleri diğer iki gruba göre daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Özel gereksinimli öğrencilerinin sosyal becerilerini etkileyen değişkenlerle ilgili daha çok çalışma yapılmasına gereksinim vardır.
