This study examines the meaning of attributed to smoking between smokers and non-smokers. Four hundred and fifty students of the Karadeniz Technical University participated in the study. Age of respondents varied from 18 to 27 years (M = 21.72, SD = 1.45); 248 were female, 202 were male. In the present sample 185 participants were currently smokers (41.11 %) and 265 participants were non-smokers (58.89 %). Attitudes towards smoking were assessed by a series of 15 statements. These attributes were negative and positive consequences of smoking. Results show that smokers and non-smokers differ in their selection of important attributes, and vary in the importance assigned to the positive and negative outcomes of smoking. Smokers tend to emphasize positive outcomes and non-smokers tend to emphasize negative outcomes.
