The main goal of the “home reading” course is to develop student skills and needs for regular reading in a foreign language. Teaching a foreign language, especially in a linguistic university, involves the use of texts. Reading in a foreign language activates cognitive activity, forms a natural incentive to study, while the learning process becomes more interesting and entertaining. This article discusses the principles of choosing texts for home reading as well as the criteria for selecting them. The selection of texts from our point of view is based on the educational value of the text, authenticity, while also taking into account the information authenticity and regional value, genre diversity and volume, and the relevance of the works for students in terms of their content.
