This study aims to review the recent discoveries on early footwear from the prehistoric period at different locations, and to provide insights on how footwear design evolved. From when the early humans emerged 2.5 million years ago to the invention of writing approximately 6,000 years ago is considered as the prehistoric period. In recent years, various archaeological discoveries reveal new evidence that prehistoric humans wore sandals, boots, and moccasins. Having evolved under the influence of various social, artistic, cultural, technological, and economic factors, these footwear designs have survived to the present day.
