Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye’de yabancı dil olarak Türkçe ve ABD’de yabancı dil olarak İngilizce öğretimi üzerine hazırlanmış doktora tezlerini konu, yöntem, çalışma grubu/araştırma nesnesi ve çalışmanın yürütüldüğü program değişkenleri bakımından karşılaştırmak, böylece Türkiye’de yabancı dil olarak Türkçe öğretimi üzerine çalışanlara farklı fikirler sunmaktır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda 2020-2022 yılları arasında Türkiye’de yabancı dil olarak Türkçe öğretimi üzerine yazılan 59 doktora tezi ile ABD’de yabancı dil olarak İngilizce öğretimi üzerine yapılan 34 doktora tezi doküman incelemesi yöntemiyle değerlendirilmiştir. Yapılan inceleme sonucunda hem Türkçe hem de İngilizce öğretimi üzerine yapılan tezlerde en fazla anlatma becerilerinin çalışıldığı, İngilizce tezlerde en çok çalışılan ikinci konu olan “anadili farklı olan öğreticilerin öğretim uygulamaları” konusuna Türkçe tezlerde hiç rastlanmadığı; Türkçe tezlerde en çok çalışılan ikinci konu olan “ders kitabı incelemesi” konusuna da İngilizce tezlerde hiç yer verilmediği görülmüştür. Türkçe ve İngilizce alanında yapılan tezler yöntem açısından karşılaştırıldığında, İngilizce tezlerde en çok nitel yöntemlerin Türkçe tezlerde ise karma yöntemin en çok kullanıldığı saptanmıştır. Tezler araştırma grubu/ nesnesi bakımından karşılaştırıldığında, İngilizce tezlerde öğretmen ve öğrenciler üzerine yapılan çalışmaların birbirine eşit olduğu, Türkçe tezlerde çoğunlukla öğrenciler üzerine çalışıldığı; İngilizce tezlerde öğretmen adaylarının öğretim deneyimlerine odaklı çalışmaların Türkçe tezlere oranla daha fazla olduğu görülmüştür. Tezler yapıldıkları program bazında değerlendirildiğinde, İngilizce tezlerin farklı disiplinlerden bölümlerde de çalışıldığı; Türkçe tezlerin ise büyük çoğunlukla Türkçe eğitimi ve yabancı dil olarak Türkçe öğretimi programlarında hazırlandığı tespit edilmiştir.
The aim of this study is to compare the doctoral theses prepared on the teaching of English as a foreign language in Turkey and in the United States as a foreign language in terms of subject, method, work group/research object and program variables in which the study is conducted, so that it is to provide different ideas to the employees on the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language in Turkey. According to this goal, 59 doctoral theses written on the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language in Turkey between 2020 and 2022 and 34 doctoral theses made on the teaching of English as a foreign language in the United States were evaluated by the method of document study. The study resulted in the study that the most narrative skills were studied in the theses on both Turkish and English teaching, the second subject most studied in the English theses was "the teaching practices of teachers who are different from the native" in the Turkish theses, the second subject most studied in the Turkish theses was "the study of the teaching book" in the English theses. When compared the theses in the field of Turkish and English from the point of view of the method, the most qualified methods in the English theses were found in the Turkish theses whereas the karma method was most used. When compared with the research group/object, the studies on teachers and students in the English theses were equal, the Turkish theses were mostly studied on students; the English theses were more studies focused on the teaching experience of the teachers candidates than the Turkish theses. When the theses were evaluated on the basis of the program, the English theses were also studied in sections from different disciplines; and the Turkish theses were mostly prepared in the Turkish teaching programmes as Turkish education and foreign language.
The aim of this study is to compare the doctoral theses prepared on teaching Turkish as a foreign language in Turkey and English as a foreign language in the USA in terms of variables such as subject, method, study group and program in which the study is carried out, thus presenting different ideas to those studying on teaching Turkish as a foreign language in Turkey. For this purpose, between 2020-2022, 59 doctoral theses on teaching Turkish as a foreign language in Turkey and 34 doctoral theses on teaching EFL in the USA were evaluated with the document review method. As a result, productive skills are the most studied subjects in the theses on both Turkish and English teaching, and the second most studied subject in English theses, “teaching practices of teachers with different native speakers” is never encountered in Turkish theses; it has been observed that the second most studied subject in Turkish theses “textbook review” isn’t included in English theses. When the theses are compared in terms of method, it is determined that the most used method is qualitative method in English theses, but in Turkish theses, the mixed method was the most used method. When the theses are compared in terms of research group, it’s seen that the studies on teachers and students in English are equal to each other; Turkish theses are mostly studied on students; in English theses, the studies focused on the teaching experiences of teacher candidates are more than Turkish theses. When the theses are evaluated on the basis of the program in which they are made, it has been determined that English theses are studied in different disciplines; Turkish theses are studied mostly in Turkish education and Turkish as a foreign language teaching programs.
