Abstract:

Due to the internal turmoil in Syria that started in March 2011, many Syrian citizens had to take shelter in our country. Turkey has admitted these refugees to the country under temporary protection by applying an "Open Door" policy. Adoption of immigrants, which progressed from war victims to permanence in the first years, has become a social problem that has turned into xenophobia in recent years. Immigrants' reluctance towards social cohesion and discontent with immigrants in Turkish society have been tried to be resolved by the authorities by facilitating naturalization. his situation affected the social cohesion of Syrians living under temporary protection in Mersin and the Turkish Republic. The reason for researching his views on citizenship is also the reason. The study was carried out in the Mezitli district of Mersin, which is one of the provinces most affected by migration. The aim of the study, according to the General Directorate of Migration Management, the number of Syrians under temporary protection is 3.763.652 as of 26.05.2022, while in Mersin this figure is 243.411 as of May 26, 2022, and according to the local administrators of Mersin, this figure has exceeded 500.000. In this study, adaptation problems of Syrian individuals under temporary protection living in Mezitli district of Mersin province and T.R. It is aimed to determine the opinions about citizenship and the reasons for preferring Turkish citizenship. For this, the Phenomenology method, which is a qualitative research method, was used in the study. Interview form was used in the research and 15 Syrian individuals with common experiences and different demographic characteristics were interviewed. Interview questions were prepared as semi-structured, and at the end of the study, evaluation was made and suggestions were presented.
