Türk şiirinin kurucu şairi Yunus Emre, yaşadığı dönemden Osmanlı'nın son yıllarına kadar sufi bir şair, bir derviş olarak tanındı. Meşrutiyet'le birlikte başlayan yeni çalışmalarda özellikle Cumhuriyet döneminde yayımlanan eserlerde ise durum değişti. Panteist, Hurufi, Devrimci, Seküler vb. Yunus portreleri ile karşılaşılmaktadır. Farklı düşünce sahiplerinin Yunus'u benimsemeleri elbette sevindiricidir. Fakat tarihi bir şahsiyeti olduğundan farklı tanımlamak onun doğru anlaşılması açısından ortaya sorunlar çıkarmaktadır. Bu da ondan faydalanmayı zorlaştırmaktadır. Ancak Yunus Emre'yi gerçek kimliği ile tanımak ve bugün için de bir değer, çağdaş sıkıntıların çözümünde bir rehber olarak görmek isteniyorsa ona dair sahih bir kimlik inşası önem taşımaktadır. Dolayısıyla eseri ortadadır ve orada onun düşünce dünyası açıkça ifade edilmektedir. Nitekim geleneğin ona dair söyledikleri bu konuda önemli imkânlar sunmaktadır.
