Abstract:

Amerikalıların Akdeniz'de ticaret yapma imkanı elde etmeye çalışmaları, Osmanlı Devleti'ne bağlı Garp Ocakları ile temasa geçmeleri iledir. 1797'den itibaren ABD ticaret gemilerinin İzmir'e gelmeye başlamaları sonucunda, ABD ile Osmanlı ülkeleri arasında ekonomik sahada bağlantılar da kurulmuştur. Osmanlı ile ticaret antlaşmasının imzalandığı 1830 öncesinde iki ülkenin hedeflerini ve yaklaşımlarını anlamamıza imkan tanıyan bazı bilgileri vererek, Akdeniz ticaretinin devletler arası çatışma konusu oluşunda Osmanlı-ABD-Garp Ocakları ilişkileri, İngiltere ve diğer Avrupa devletlerinin konuyla ilgisi, literatürde fazla kullanılmamış bazı hedef kaynaklar da esas alınmak suretiyle bu makalede ele alınacaktır. Bu bağlamda Kaptan William Bainbridge'in Akdeniz'de ABD adına faaliyetleri ve bu faaliyetlerin ABD'yi Osmanlı Devleti ile ilişkiye geçirme sürecinin önemi anlatılmıştır. THE SIGNIFICIANCE OF CAPTAIN WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE'S ISTANBUL TRAVEL IN INITIATION OF COMMERCIAL RELATIONS BETWEEN TURKEY-AMERICA IN THE MEDITERREAN Americans first tried to do business in the Mediterranean when they contacted with the Barbary States that ruled by the Ottoman Empire. After the American merchant ships came to Smyrna as of 1797 the USA and the Ottoman states begun to establish economic relations. Giving some information that may help us understand the aims and approaches of the two states before 1830 when the USA signed a treaty of commerce with the Ottoman Empire, the issues on the relations of the Ottoman Empire-the USA-Barbary States during the conflicts arisen among the states resulting from the Mediterranean trade and the interest of the United Kingdom and other European countries are discussed in this article referring some resources that have not been used in the literature too often. This article is not a more detailed study based on the archive records. Some of the archive records are mentioned just as to explain when the relations between the two countries begun. The activities of the Commodore William Bainbridge for America and the importance of his activities to start the American-Ottoman relations are cited.
