Abstract:

Developing writing skills is more difficult than other skills; therefore it is difficult to gain the writing habit. Being clarified and being visible of many thoughts by the means of writing separate writing from the other skills. It is clarified in the studies that students who are qualified in writing skills are found to be successful in terms of academic achievement as well (Temur, 2001). Therefore, it is very important in terms of academic achievement that students should acquire writing habits. In this study, it is aimed to specify how learners who gained writing skills in the secondary school have writing habits and determine the writing reasons. In this study which was designed as a case study, there were 34 learners who were in secondary school in the city center of Bursa and gained writing skills. In the study, open-ended survey and semi-structured interviews were used as a data collection tool, data were analyzed by using content analysis method. The data showed that students\' writing reasons are because of their teachers\' encouragement. In the study, it is revealed that students' psychological reasons, the encouragement of family, characteristic features, personal interests, reading habits, competitions, and published articles have an effect on gaining students' writing habits. It is seen that feedback given by the teachers, motivating students verbally, allowing time for writing regularly, loved by the learners and using different methods have an effect on gaining writing habits for students.
