Abstract:

After the two battles of Wadi Mursit in Mazda April 6th, 1915 AD; the battle of Qasr Bouhadi "Al-Qardabiya" on April 28th -29th, 1915 AD, the Italian forces withdrew and fortified inside the cities of Al-Khums and Tripoli. Following these developments, the Ottoman Empire took advantage of these conditions in Libya. Therefore, they have dispatched Suleiman Al-Barouni, as wali and commandant, to take over the western region along with the Sheikhs and the Jihad Leaders. German submarines landed in Qasr Ahmed port, which gained the city of Misurata great importance in the jihad. As a result of this, the supplies of weapons and ammunitions were brought by the German submarines. These urgent developments required for establishing a military school to form the first basis for graduating officers and soldiers to benefit from them in the war against Italy. The school, which was founded in 1916, was specialized in recruiting and training to carry weapons. It was under the supervision of the Ottoman officer Nuri Pasha and was called either “Nuri Pasha School” or “Misurata Military School”. The administration of this school was assigned to the officer Muhammad Amin, who participated in a number of jihad battles inside Libya. a number of officers and soldiers graduated from this school and participated in the jihad. After that, they became the basis of the Tripolitan Republic Army. Finally, we will tackle several issues in this research as the following:- 1. The motives that led to the establishment of this school and the role of Nuri Pasha in it. 2. The military and financial support that was received from the Ottoman Empire and Germany. 3. The contribution of some of the school’s graduates in the Libyan jihad.
