During the 19th century excavations at the Augustus Temple in Ankara, a headless seated Roman statue was found, photographed by a Russian photographer and later published in France. The very same statue appears in various pictures and sketches during the 19th and 20th centuries, including the ones by the Italian architect Giulio Mongeri who later contributed to the city with several important edifices. Although the statue was mentioned by several scholars it was never thoroughly studied. The artwork, which after its discovery at the Temple of Augustus showed up in several different places never returned to the temple but it has always remained on display and it has been appreciated both during the Ottoman and the Republican period Ankara. The statue has been in the permanent open air exhibit at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara where it is waiting for proper stylistic and archival research.
