Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to evaulate the financial performance of private and state-owned commercial banks operating in Turkey by multi-criteria decision-making methods. Design/Methodology: The data set of the study consists of the annual financial ratios of the 15 deposit banks operating in Turkey for the years 2015-2019. The financial performance of banks was evaluated using the VIKOR analysis technique, one of the multi-criteria decision making methods. Findings: Within the framework of the determined financial ratios, the most successful banks in terms of financial performance by years, T.C. Ziraat Bankası A.Ş. for the first three years and ING Bank A.Ş. for the last two years has been. The banks with the lowest success are HSBC Bank A.Ş. for the first two years, and Alternatif Bank A.Ş. for the next two years and Turkey Halk Bankası A.Ş. for the last year has been. Limitations: As the sample of the study consists of 15 banks, performance evaluation is valid only among these banks. Originality/Value: Performance evaluation of banks is generally conducted using the TOPSIS method. It is thought that this study will contribute to the literature in terms of both the use of the VIKOR method and the use of a more up-to-date data set.
