Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the attitudes of nurses working in surgical clinics towards medical errors. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted between April 2019 - May 2019, with the participation of 103 nurses working in surgical clinics of a university and public hospital. The representation power of the sample was 76%. Before the study, ethics committee and institution permissions were obtained. Nurse information form and Scale of attitudes towards medical errors were used for data collection. Data were analyzed by using Shapiro Wilk Test, Chi square, Kruskal Wallis tests and Spearman correlation analysis methods in SPSS 22.0 package program. Results: The mean age of the nurses was 33.7 ± 7.9 years and 83.5% were female. The total score average of nurses' a scale of attitudes towards medical errors was 3.4 ± 0.2. The mean score of the subscale of the scale was 2.8 ± 0.7 for medical error perception, 4.0 ± 0.4 for medical error approach and 3.6 ± 0.2 for medical error causes. The mean score of Scale of attitudes towards medical errors was not affected by age, gender, working year, service and weekly working hours (p> 0.05). Conclusion: As a result, it was determined that surgical nurses were aware of the importance of medical errors and error reporting. We recommend organizing in-service trainings to improve nurses 'attitudes towards medical errors and conduct research to identify factors that affect nurses' attitudes towards medical errors.
