Modern çağı ve modern insanı açıklamaya çalışan en önemli kuramlardan biri olan Psikanalitik Kuram, Sigmund Freud’un yapısal kişilik modeli ile insan davranışlarının altında yatan nedenlerin kökenlerine ulaşabilme imkânı tanır. Bir organizma olarak insanın tutum ve davranışlarını aydınlatan yapısal kişilik kuramı, yalnızca psikoloji ya da sosyoloji alanında değil, aynı zamanda sinema gibi farklı alanları da kapsayan çalışmalara kaynaklık eder. Psikanalitik film kuramı ise, filmlerde yer alan psikanalitik unsurları saptayarak, hem bir araç olarak sinemanın insan zihniyle olan bağına, hem de filmlerin psiko-sosyal boyutunun incelenmesiyle sinema ve toplum ilişkisine yakından bakabilmeyi sağlamaktadır. Pek çok filminde psikanalitik unsurların yer aldığı yönetmen Roman Polanski’nin Knife in the Water (Sudaki Bıçak, 1962) filmi id, ego ve süperegodan oluşan yapısal kişilik kuramının bir alegorisi niteliğindedir. Bu anlamda psikanalitik film okumasıyla, Polanski’nin Sudaki Bıçak filmindeki yapısal kişilik kuramından izler aramayı amaçlayan bu çalışma, yapılan çözümleme neticesinde filmin id, ego ve süperegonun mücadelesi üzerine kurulduğunu ortaya koymuştur.
The Psychoanalytic Theory, one of the important theories trying to explain modern age and modern humanity, recognizes the possibility of Sigmund Freud’s structural personality model to reach the origins of the causes under human behavior. The theory of structural personality, which illuminates the attitudes and behaviors of a person as a organism, leads to studies that cover not only the field of psychology or sociology, but also the different fields such as cinema. The psychoanalytic film theory, by defining the psychoanalytic elements in the films, enables both the connection of the cinema with the human mind as a tool, and the study of the psycho-social dimension of the films to look closely on the relationship between the cinema and society. Roman Polanski’s Knife in the Water (1962) is an allegory of the structural personality theory consisting of id, ego and superegod. In this sense, by reading a psychoanalytic film, this study aimed at searching for traces from Polanski's theory of structural personality in the Water's Knife film, revealed that the film was based on the struggle of id, ego and superegon as a result of the analysis.
