Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to determine the relationship between burnout level of health care personnel working in Afyonkarahisar University of Health Sciences intensive care units and sociodemographic variables thereafter aimed to propose a solution for this problem. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A two-part questionnaire including a sociodemographic data form consisting of 18 questions and the Maslach burnout scale consisting of 22 questions were applied to a total of 145 intensive care workers, including faculty members, specialist doctors, assistant doctors, and nurses. We used SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20, Chicago, ABD) for the statistical analysis of the data obtained through the survey application. RESULTS: The mean emotional exhaustion score of the Maslach burnout scale of intensive care workers was 18.26±7.61, the mean of depersonalization dimension was 8.42±2.96, and the mean of personal accomplishment was 10.64±4.15. CONCLUSIONS: It was found that intensive care workers experienced moderate burnout according to their emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscale scores. In terms of the burnout syndrome experienced by intensive care workers, we believe that it would be beneficial to identify the problems of the personnel, to carry out corrective actions, and repeat the questionnaire at certain intervals.
