Tarih biliminin geçmişte yaşanmış bir olayı aktarma yönünden ziyade “aslında ne oldu?” sorusuna yanıt bulabilmesi tarihin bilim yönünün kanıtlayıcı unsurlarındandır. Hatıratlar “aslında ne oldu?” sorusuna cevap bulmak adına tarih biliminin en önemli yardımcılarındandır. Bu yönüyle hatıratlar birincil kaynaklar olması bakımından tarih öğretiminde son derece öneme haizdir. Bu çalışmada, hatıratların tanımlanmış ayrı bir kaynak olarak öğretim programlarında açık bir şekilde yer alma durumu, hatıratların kullanımında hatıratların 8. sınıf Türkiye Cumhuriyeti İnkılap Tarihi ve Atatürkçülük Dersi kitabı yazarlarına belirli kısıtlamalarda ya da yönlendirmelerde bulunulma durumu ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca hatıratların 8. sınıf Türkiye Cumhuriyeti İnkılap Tarihi ve Atatürkçülük Dersi kitaplarında ünite temelli kullanılma yoğunluklarında öğretim programlarının etkisi anlaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Ders kitabı uygulamalarında hatıratların teknik olarak okuyucuya doğru bir şekilde aktarılma durumu ve bu süreçte yapılan teknik hatalar incelenmiştir. Ders kitabı uygulamalarında hatıratların birincil kaynak olmasına rağmen doğrudan kullanılmayarak, ikincil kaynakların alıntılarından yararlanılarak kullanıldığına dair örnekler üzerinden hatalar tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışma evrenini 1980 sonrası uygulanan 8. Sınıf Türkiye Cumhuriyeti İnkılap Tarihi ve Atatürkçülük Dersi Öğretim Programları ve iki farklı dönemde uygulanan dört adet 8. sınıf Türkiye Cumhuriyeti İnkılap Tarihi ve Atatürkçülük Dersi kitabı oluşturmaktadır.
