Abstract:

The positive and protective effects of perceived social support from someone on mental health are a well-known fact in the literature. Studies suggest that social support is closely related to concepts such as self-esteem, life satisfaction, psychological resilience, psychological well-being, depression, anxiety, loneliness, and stress. The high perceived social support of people has an effect that both improves and protects psychological health. In this respect, it is thought that the social support that people receive or perceive from their siblings will also assume similar roles. Because the sibling relationship is accepted as one of the contexts that form the basis of psychosocioemotional development. Although the literature is full of studies examining social support, it has not fully addressed the perceived or perceived social support from siblings, and the majority of studies have generally examined the role of family, parent, and friend-based social support. The limited number of studies that mention sibling social support show that it plays an important role in the development and mental health of the individual. The aim of this study is to recognize and understand the concept of sibling social support and to provide a source for future empirical studies. In this context, the limited number of studies in the literature explaining the nature of perceived social support from siblings were examined. The findings of the conducted study were found to be parallel to the basic nature of social support. However, it has been determined that there are still points that need to be clarified and that there is a need for studies that explain the nature of perceived social support from siblings. Finally, suggestions were made on the subject.
