Abstract:

Turkey-Israel relations have left behind many important historical processes and periods from the past to the present. The relations, which historically date back to the Ottoman period and gained institutional character with the establishment of Israel in 1948, faced political tensions and strategic cooperation processes both in the Cold War period and in the post-Cold War period. During the Cold War period, Turkey-Israel relations were affected by global powers, regional powers, local elements and issues. Bilateral relations extended to strategic cooperation in the 1950s were shaped by the Arab-Israeli Wars in the 1960s, Turkey's search for support for the Cyprus issue and the weight of the Palestinian issue, and the relations became stagnant until the 1990s. With the impact of the post-Cold War international conjuncture and the developments in the Israeli-Palestinian issue, relations were revived and the period between 1990 and 2002 was called the "golden years". Although the relations after 2000 experienced political crises, they were relatively protected economically, but after the 2010 Mavi Marmara Raid, they became stagnant again until the energy geopolitics in 2018. In this study, it is stated that Turkey-Israel relations have been able to progress in the process of cooperation from an economic, military and sociocultural perspective, even though they have experienced political crises from the past to the present, and after the Cold War, the two countries could develop definitions of common interest in the political, economic, military and security fields, and that this situation was global (USA, Russia) and regional powers (Egypt, Syria, Iran etc.) and its perspective on regional problems (Palestine Issue etc.) In this study, the historical process and events are discussed from this perspective.
