Abstract:

The issue of Rü’yetullah started to be discussed at the end of the first century of the Hijri, and there was an ongoing debate between the Mu’tazila, who advocated the impossibility of seeing Allah, and the Ahl al-Sunnah, who argued that Allah will be seen in the hereafter. Maturidi, who is one of the important representatives of Ahl al-Sunnah, did not remain indifferent to this issue, which took its place among the current discussion topics in the period when he lived, on the contrary, he gave wide coverage to the subject in his Kitâbü’t-Tawhid and Kitâbü’t-Te’vilat. He explains the issue through the criticisms of the Mu'tazila towards his contemporary al-Ka'bî; He detailed it through the filter of verses, hadiths and reason and said that it was necessary for Allah to be seen in the afterlife and that it would happen. While analyzing the issue of Rü’yetullah, Maturidi used arguments, presentation of evidence, etc. in both of his works. The method he followed reveals the harmony of meaning and phrase between these works, points out that the views and the owner of the view are the same person, and shows that the owner of both works is Maturidi. This harmony; It removes the suspicion of belonging that some orientalists who do research on Mâturîdî’s works have created on the works. In this article, Maturidi’s views on rü’yetullah in both of his mentioned works; It is given comparatively without damaging its originality, and minor differences in the phrase are also shown. With this study, both Maturidi’s views on the issue are presented together in a tidy manner and it is revealed that Kitâbü’t-Tawhid and Kitâbü’t-Te’vilat belong to Maturidi.
