En bilindik anlamda tipografi, anlamlı bütünü okunur kılan, kelimeleri ve sesi temsil eden, görsel bir dil olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Denebilir ki; tipografi, sözel metinleri anlamlı yapıya dönüşteren temel yapı taşıdır. Geleneksel tasarım yapısından günümüze değin, tipografinin teorik yapılanmasını etkileyen düşünsel dönemler gelişmiş ve tipografiye yüklenen anlamlandırma modelleri değişime uğramıştır. Geleneksel tipografinin yazıya yüklediği okunma misyonu, Mallarme’nin sembolist şiirlerinde gerçekleşen dizge ve hareket başlangıcıyla yıkılmaya başlandığı kabul edilebilir. Böylece tipografi ses-duygu-kavram yapılarıyla eşzamanlı tek yüzeyde tasarlanarak okunaklılığın dışında da hissedilebilirlik, okunabilirlik düşüncesiyle varlık gösterebilmiştir. Bu yazının amacı; tipografinin duygusunu resmetmeye dönüştüren deneysel tipografinin tarih içerisindeki retorik rolünü ele alan örnekler ile deneysellik tanımlarının ilişkisini açıklayabilmektir.
