Özet:

The family grave of the Epidii from the 1st century BC found in the ancient landscape of Kresto-nia (near Platania) with its unpublished Latin funerary inscription lay in the focus of this paper. The inscription, engraved on a relief plate, was erected for the brothers Lucius Epidius and Gaius Epidius, sons of a Numerius Epidius, as well as for the other members of the family of Gaius Epidius, namely his wife Epidia Hilara and his children Gaius Epidius, Gaius Epidius Quartio and Epidia Maxima. The first part of the paper is dedicated to the analysis of onomastics, and thus to the identification of the persons. In the second part, we will analyze the geographical and chrono-logical distribution of the gentilicium name Epidius. The evidence (211 persons in total) shows that the name was predominantly spread in Latium and Campania and only isolated in the rest of Italy. Outside of Italy, the gentilicium was common in Venetia and Histria, as well as in Dalmati-an cities, while its use in the rest of the Roman provinces was rather restricted. The rare praeno-men Numerius in connection with the gentilicium Epidius, mainly attested in Latium and Cam-pania, supports the assumption that the persons mentioned in the funerary inscription were of Ita-lian origin and had settled in Macedonia as negοtiatores.
