Emzirme ve anne sütünün tarihsel süreçteki yerine baktığımızda, tarih öncesi dönemden günümüze kadar anne sütü, bebek ve çocuk beslemesinde vazgeçilmez bir besin kaynağı olmuştur. Tarih boyunca, mesela Mezopotamya ve Antik Yunan’da emzirme kutsanmış, mitolojide de emzirmeye ve anne sütüne çok sayıda atıf yapıldığı görülmüştür. Orta Çağ Döneminde ise, anne sütünün, emziren kadının fiziksel ve psikolojik özelliklerini bebeğe iletebileceğine inanılmış bu yüzden emzirmenin annelerin görevi olduğu savunulmuş ve sütanne kullanımına karşı çıkılmıştır. Rönesans Döneminde, çocuk sağlığı ile ilgili yazılar, annenin bebeğini emzirmesini savunmuştur. Takip eden yüzyıllarda sanayileşme ile birlikte anneler çalışmak zorunda kalmıştır. Bu toplumsal dönüşümle birlikte ilk kez formül mama kullanılmaya başlanmıştır ve 20.yüzyılda anne sütünün içeriği ve faydası kanıtlanmış ancak formül mamalar bebek beslenmesinde ilk tercih olarak kullanılmaya devam etmiştir. Bu yüzyılın sonunda, bebek ölümlerinde artışla birlikte Nekrotizan Enterokolit gibi birçok hastalık salgınları meydana gelmiştir. Günümüzde ise, bebek ve çocuk sağlığı açısından anne sütüyle beslenmenin önemi tüm dünya ülkeleri tarafından kabul edilmekte ve uluslararası kuruluşlar tarafından da desteklenmektedir. Sonuç olarak; geçmişten günümüze tüm medeniyetlerde ve çağlarda, emzirme ve anne sütünün önemi kabul edilmiştir. Ancak bazı dönemlerde anne sütüne ve emzirmeye gereken önem verilmemiştir. Bu sebepten dolayı, derleme türündeki çalışmanın amacı, tarihsel süreçte emzirme ve anne sütünün yerini ve önemini açıklamaktır.
When we look at the place of breastfeeding and breast milk in the historical process, breast milk has been the most significant nutritional element of infant and child feeding since prehistoric times to the present day. Throughout history, for example, in Mesopotamia and Ancient Greece, breastfeeding was blessed, and many references were made to breastfeeding and breast milk in mythology. In the medieval period, breast milk was believed to transmit the physical and psychological characteristics of nursing women to babies. Breastfeeding was stated to be the responsibility of mothers, and wet nursing was strongly opposed. During the Renaissance, writings on children’s health supported that breastfeeding should be performed by mothers themselves. In the following centuries, industrialization forced women to participate in labor force. With this social transformation, formula was introduced for the first time and, although the benefits of breast milk were proven in the 20th century, it still had been the first choice for feeding babies. At the end of this century, in addition to rising baby mortality rates, many epidemics such as Necrotizing Enterocolitis broke out. Today, the importance of breastfeeding for babies’ health is globally accepted and supported by international institutions. As a result, the importance of breastfeeding and breast milk has been recognized in all civilizations and ages from past to present. However, in some periods, breast milk and breastfeeding were not given the importance they deserve. For this reason, this review study aims to explain the place and importance of breastfeeding and breast milk in the historical process.
