Nasîruddîn Muhammed Tûsî (1201-1274) bilim ve felsefe tarihinde önemli bir yeri olan Azerbaycan’lı Türk-İslam âlimlerimizden biridir. Matematik, geometri, astronomi, mantık, tıp, felsefe, kelam, ahlak, psikoloji, pedagoji, coğrafya, edebiyat, güzel sanatlar ve ilahiyat gibi çeşitli alanlarda 70’den fazla özgün eseri telif etmiş, ansiklopedik bir bilgin olarak şöhret kazanmıştır (Memmedov, 1994: 243). İlaveten siyaset, madenbilim, tarih, coğrafya, fıkıh, tefsir ve tasavvuf da onun sınırlı da olsa ilgilendiği ve kitap yazdığı alanlar arasındadır. Tûsî, astronomi ve matematik alanlarında yazdığı teliflerin yanısıra Arşimed, Öklid ve Batlamyus gibi bilginlerin eserlerine düzeltme olarak yazdığı tahrirleriyle de ünlüdür (Wickens, 1964: 13; Sıddıki, 1990: 185; Ülken; 1983: 134; Memmedov, 1994: 243). En dikkat çekici özelliği bilim ve bilimsel araştırmalara olan tutkusudur. Tûsî, toplumları bir bütün olarak ele alır; ekonomiye, işbölümü ve adalete çok önem verir ve toplumların gelişmişlik düzeyini bu açıdan değerlendirir. Toplumun istenilen düzeye gelebilmesinde en önemli faaliyetin tahsil, talim ve terbiye olduğunu önemle vurgular. Bu alanda yaptığı bilimsel çalışmalar, eserler ve ortaya koyduğu fikirler bugün de hala geçerliliğini korumaktadır.
