Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem, kuramsal düşünceleriyle Osmanlı şiirini şekillendiren, onun estetik ölçütlerini belirleyen isimlerin başında gelir. Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem’e göre fikir, his ve hayalden oluşan yeni şiirin tek kaynağı tabiat olmalıdır. Ekrem klasik şiirdeki belli anlamları iletmek için kullanılan, soyut, kalıplaşmış bir fon olarak işlev gören tabiatın karşısında, gözlem sonucu şiire giren tabiatı savunur. Şairi tabiatı gözlemlemekle, fikir, his ve hayalini tabiat hakikatlerine sadık kalarak dile getirmekle mükellef kılar.
Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem comes at the forefront of the names that shape the Ottoman poetry with his theoretical thoughts, determining his aesthetic standards. According to Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem, the only source of the new poem consisting of ideas, feelings and dreams must be nature. In contrast to the nature used to communicate certain meanings in the classical poem, which serves as an abstract, shaped background, observation defends the nature that enters the poem. The poet is committed to observing nature, expressing his ideas, feelings and dreams by being faithful to the truths of nature. His view on the nature-poetry relationship was first shaped by the influence of French romantics, including Victor Hugo and Lamartine. Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem is as practical as the theorist. He has published a lot of poems that place all kinds of beautiful "things" in nature. It holds a wide place in these poems as night, image and subject. The night is an integral part of the classical poetry. In the poems of Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem, the night is not imprisoned in patterns as in the classical poem; it becomes a constantly changing image according to the contemporary aesthetic atmosphere of the poem. In this context, focusing on the night in the poem of Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem offers the opportunity to discuss the aesthetics of his poem, both the untouchable and renewed aspects of the classical poem, the theoretically defenced aspects of the practical and contradictory aspects.
